About

Textile art. Eclectic accessories. Eco-conscious.

Hello, I am Juanita. As an avid upcycler and full-time daydreamer, ‘Juanita Tortilla’ is a collection of uniquely handcrafted quirky bags and purses with personality. My ethos is to reduce, re-use and re-create.

Raw, free-spirited and never subtle, Juanita Tortilla celebrates colour and tactile textiles. Experimenting and tinkering away on each item personally with my undivided attention, each Juanita Tortilla creation is an individual piece of heart.

To include my interest in printmaking, I put my stamp onto my work, literally, featuring our world-travelling designer Ragdoll Birman cat, Pickle, in the ‘Pickled Pockets’ collection using block printing and silk screen printing, expanding the range to include homewares and other accessories. (Let’s Pickle everything.) Pickle’d products may be found in an independent Etsy shop, pickledpockets, opened in 2015.

In 2016, a new series of South Australian native bird illustrations was introduced to the Juanita Tortilla repertoire. An ‘Amateur Backyard Bird Count’ so to speak, which stands at 5 birds and 1 chook, and it continues to grow.

As an independent maker, each creation is hand made by myself — alongside several cups of tea — journeying from my home to yours.

Born and raised in Singapore I have been gathering experiences since 2004 from Europe, America, and now Australia where we call home. I am on most social media sites (facebook and Instagram) and would enjoy having a chat with you.

Thank you kindly for your interest!

A domesticated blog with a different aftertaste

I blog about my adventures as a Maker + Domestic Engineer + Cat Mom + Trailing Spouse. Happily married to a scientist, we share our home with our beloved cat Pickle, and are working on making this blog untypical.

Quite a garden-variety Hausfrau, I enjoy
* drinking tea for water,
* knitting and crochet,
* thrift or opportunity shopping,
* cooking, the occasional baking, thence eating,
* and travelling.

When not tending to my Etsy Shop, I teach myself to make my own clothes. Disguised as a world traveller, I assist my husband in some of his field trips for Conservation Drones as the field photographer.

I can also be found on most hip-and-hap'nin social media sites such as Bloglovin', Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter as JuanitaTortilla. Welcome to this personal blog with a different aftertasteI'm glad you're here. Please do say Hi!
